Key Stage 1 children took part in an African Drumming Workshop as their Golden Time treat for this half term. Fanuel from Zimbabwe taught us some rhythms and we played some musical games.
We looked at the painting 'Surprised in a storm' by Henri Rousseau then we painted our own jungle scene using watercolours.
We used Word to make fact sheets about the rainforest and added photographs of our recent visit to the Sunderland Winter Gardens. Next we used a paint package to create rainforest pictures using a range of tools.
Year 2 visited Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens to learn about life in the rainforest. They found out about the different layers that make up the rainforest and learned about the plants and creatures that are found in each layer. The children used their senses to explore some items from the rainforest and suggested possible uses for them. They also took part in an Art workshop. First they sketched leaves of 10 different kinds of plants growing in the gardens. Next they chose their favourite leaf and draw it on a large piece of paper. Finally they painted the leaf with rainbow colours.
The Amazon Rainforest covers a large part of Brazil. We found out many facts about Brazil and used an atlas to discover that it is in the continent of South America.
To celebrate our good behaviour this half term our last afternoon was spent enjoying Easter craft activities and taking part in an Easter egg hunt.
We solved riddles to name different 3D shapes. Then used Clixi to find different nets which make a cube. Next we used the Net books to solve a series of interactive challenges online.
We have been learning about the capital cities of the countries of the U.K. Today we made a presentation to the rest of the class telling them what we had found out about the city of Edinburgh in Scotland. We made a video of our performance using the iPads. Later we watched the video back and self assessed how well we felt we had spoken.
